Grace, May 2020
If you told me this would happen 6 months ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. On March 13th, 2020 at the end of the school day, an announcement was made over the loudspeaker that due to COVID-19 Wayland High School was closed for the next two weeks. Now it's May 29th and we have completed switching to online school for the rest of the year, and it is unsure as to if we will return in the fall. What started as a nice 2-week break from school, turned into not being able to go over to your friend's houses, or being able to go in public without a mask for 3 months. All professional sports and spring sports, from the college to youth level, have been canceled or put on hold. For me, I have missed out on playing lacrosse this spring, along with some summer hockey camps and showcases that are already being canceled. Although, those are just the little things that people have lost. Being stuck in our house with our families has been emotionally taxing for everyone, but for me, it is a reminder to be grateful that I have a safe space to quarantine, and to have parents who are financially stable enough to last through the financial uncertainty that COVID-19 has caused.
Nobody knows what will happen next. This has been the most frustrating fact that all Americans have had to deal with. The US now has the most cases in the world and many states are starting to open back up, which is frustrating since pandemic experts are saying it is too soon, but then again people need money to support their families. People have held riots and protest against the stay at home order in different states, so they can get their lives back, which is counter-intuitive since large groups of people spread the virus. It’s a very complicated situation that seems to be dividing our country even more. I hope in the future the US and other countries will make the right decisions that will save lives and get us back to normal in the quickest and safest way possible.
